Thanks for a great list again! Btw, New Religion is stellar. It reminded me not only of Kurosawa (whose last film is not too good, but I'm thinking, maybe, he's all "Cure" and nothing else?) but of "Irezumi" (1966) — probably, because of the guilt theme.

Also I totally loved Crown of Madness except for the drum sound.

I hear you regarding the Crown of Madness drum tone... the kicks are bit too up front and clicking rather than thudding for my liking. What impresses me most with the album is the brevity kills aesthetic to the song writing where they manage to get a lot of ebb/flow and atmosphere in brief. Great musicianship and performances across the board.

Very good call regarding Irezumi. As far as Kiyoshi... It's definitely Cure, Charisma, Kairo, Tokyo Sonata for me. I do like his short from last year, Chime, a lot. Works almost as a bridge between Cure and Kairo.

Chime is good, I meant Cloud which was a bit disappointing.

So far this year the main movie for me was new Cronenberg (senior) where Eros and Thanatos not so much clash as come together. Probably his best since History of Violence.

I missed Cloud when it played a festival date here.

I haven't enjoyed many David Cronenberg movies after Dead Ringers other than Spider and Eastern Promises.

I liked Cosmopolis, mainly because it was another "unfilmable" book and David knows how to do it. But Maps to rhe Stars was disappointing, although I really wanted to like it.

And what do you think about Guiltless? See that their album didn't make your list.

the Guiltless album is solid. What sticks out most for me is the drumming, not so much the actual songs. Maybe by end of the year it'll grow on me more and something from the current Q1 list will last in my head less.
