A pair of I, Voidhanger releases announced that catch my ears: Noise Trail Immersion and Thanatorean … yeah, I know the Thanatorean track has been posted here before. I need a Polish act in the mix. It’s mandatory. So, check the title of the article. Until the Complete Discography releases, “Godspeed.”
The Sect Entropy label unearths a triumvirate of evil the past week with Seas of Cosmic Filth, KVR, and Nioth Korghai.
Ease off the metal, move In Covert. Los Angeles post punk industrial borrowing heavily from UK artists of yore. Great stuff culling booming bass, huge washes of delay and reverb to the guitarwork, vocals that are part snot nose punk snarl and desperate pleading, in the pocket drumming and a maelstrom of synth noise. This is the Sisters of Mercy, the Church, Fields of the Nephilim, Killing Joke, Godflesh collision you needed.
Chi-town’s burndy are similar to In Covert in that familiar elements at play are reconfigured in such manner to make it their own. Burndy have a different arsenal to choose from, including brass and folk instrumentation. 4AD’s MASS comes to mind for the stark, eerie atmosphere. Work in a little In Camera magic, too. This is a distant cry from what Megan Emish does with Bloodyminded.
Speaking Bloodyminded, Mark Solotroff released a new solo effort last month. This, too, is a far cry from power electronics while using similar hardware: analog synths. This time the circuitry is bent toward drones and sweeping oscillations. Soundscapes on hand can be soothingly meditative to unnervingly claustrophobic, ranging from snippets of treated sounds to long form transmissions.
From the abstractions Stateside to the UK with AAA Gripper for a post punk exercise. The presser cites Can and No Means No as points of reference. Who am I to argue? I’d add PiL, too. Guitar work appropriately noisy, clipped, bass and drums in lockstep that can move into more loose freestyle swing and sprechstimme style vocals.
The return of Brazil’s Antimonument … “Hail the New Form” kicks off Reaping Oblivion in a deathgrind hybrid harkening to the late 80s/early 90s: Master/Deathstrike, Napalm Death Harmony Corruption/Utopia Banished. Even the closer, a death industrial spiral would be a welcome addition to an unearthed CMI or Slaughter Productions compilation.
If the latest Sumac/Moor Mother collab isn’t quite scratching the post sludge doom itch for you, Geremiah could very well be the cure you seek. Troll under the bridge vo-kills, detuned to the depths of hell guitar, bass VI, energetic drumming. Songs move at times in a free form capacity and at other intervals locked in on intricate rhythmic patterns.
Posted it over on facebook already, but, it should be here, too: Gorguts at Northwest Terror Fest with a new song.

Martikor has found a new home on the east coast. Musically remains cutting edge post metal and this time out strictly instrumental. The guitar layering on display here - close to the Gravenchalice polyrhythmic three guitar assault and textures - provide ample density, harmony, melody to compensate for the lack of vocals. Once the black sludge is dialed back to ethereal climes, there is a depth to the songwriting that works haunting magic.
Not exactly my favorite track of theirs, but, there is a new Maruja lined up in the 3rd quarter. Here’s the first taste.
Being a shill for Sprain, the act that emerged from its demise Shearling has released their first album. Does it hit as hard as The Lamb As Effigy? Not after the initial spin, but, it doesn’t discount the fact Motherfucker, I am Both: “Amen” and “Hallelujah” will be in high regard come year’s end. This is a virulent, noisy, angular, manic no wave, post punk scuzz fest. You could mash Scratch Acid, Swans, No Trend, Flipper, Missing Foundation, Cop Shoot Cop, The Birthday Party together and still miss the mark. Shearling doesn’t.
oh, and before signing off… new Obskuritatem. Black Plague Circle mayhemic racket. First dose below.
"yeah, I know the Thanatorean track has been posted here before".
Not that I can recall and the track sounds pretty cool!
And thanks for Nick Cave live footage. I visited his fantastic concert during Skeleton Tree tour, back when Russia was, you know, slightly different country, and he's still so full of viguor. 2,5 hours flew by just like this.
