Winding out this miserable year. This is the end. Until next year. Next week.
๛ (KOMOOTRA) is from Siam and work in a sludge pit blacker than any known in Hell. Feedback drenched black metal funeral doom noise is the law. Physical copy releases in February. Until then, choke on the digital version and enjoy the abuse.
Choroszcz is a one man Polish wrecking machine. Primarily black metal with excursions into sludge and post territories. This is a fantastic foil to things like Thaw or Odraza where you never quite know where the foot is going to drop in terms of riffing or song structure. Not that these songs are arranged in a highly complex manner, but, they use effects and layers in interesting ways and are clever enough to twist in unsuspected shapes. The vocal attack is ferocious and just when you think he’s at the end of his tether, it breaks and he hits another level of sheer lunacy. Lucky for me there are 2 more releases from this project to check out.
Willowtip best sums it up: “Through mercurial waves beneath the moon's mournful glow, a trinity of incarnate beings that embody Mithridatum have conjured forth the entity known as Harrowing, an auditory pilgrimage traversing a gloomscape leaden with dissonance, despondency, isolation, entropy... into the abyss.” If you said this was a collaboration between Zhrine, Ulcerate and Thantifaxath it would make sense.
Dane death dealers Deiquisitor have announced the release of Apotheosis and, to me, at least with this new track, appear to be devolving into an even more primitive state.
A return to Poland and an ep from Ukć. 3 songs digital and a 4th song on the physical edition. This, like Choroszcz, is a one man project. This being by Icanraz (Łukasz Sarnacki), drummer on the most recent Voidfire. However, Ukć is the more spit (necro)shined of the two and doesn’t delve in as dark and sludged up climes. This is of a driving blackened death variety with a knack for breaking out melodic solos, ornamental textures, and sung sections. There are majestic harmonies and melodic sections recalling Bathory of twilight of the gods and hammerheart yore as well as aggressive moments that are in line with Behemoth.
The ever prolific Hornwood Fell released a fantastic full length in 2022 with Sgr A and they bid this year farewell with “Avoid.” This shows yet another wrinkle to the sound. This one off track has a noise rock lock groove element to their quasi black metal sound. The direction this takes makes me think of Nevoa - Towards Belief.
